William (Bill) Powell Dart of Eugene, OR, age 85, died peacefully while under hospice care after a brief bout with colon cancer. He was the son of William P., Sr. and Stella Monasterski. He is survived by his wife Joyce of 62 years, a younger brother Corey (Evelyn) of Delaware, children Keith of San Francisco, Todd of San Antonio, Rebecca of Vancouver, British Columbia and six grandchildren.
Bill was born in Peekskill, NY. During World War Two, his family lived briefly in Panama City, FL. From there the family moved to Remsen, NY and eventually ended up in Lyons Falls, NY where his father worked in a paper mill. His mother worked, occasionally, as a nurse.
Bill showed an interest in electronics from an early age. This led him to take a course in electrical technology at Mohawk Valley Technical Institute. He dropped out of the technical school to take a job with General Electric in Utica, NY. He left General Electric because of an opportunity to work for the Air Force in Thule, Greenland on the BMEWS line. Before he left for Thule, Bill was sent to New Jersey for specialized training. That is where he met and married his devoted wife, Joyce.
After spending the 18 months in Thule, Bill worked for the agricultural department setting up radio relay stations in Utah. After that he worked on various projects for various companies which included Goldstone tracking station in California and Raytheon Electronics as a guarantee/warranty technician. Eventually he and Joyce ended up living in Eugene where he retired and lived out his remaining years.
