Sylvia Ann Jones Baker passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Eugene, Oregon, at the age of 93.
Born on August 15, 1931, in Grand Junction, CO, Sylvia was the only child of Ted C & JoyBelle Jones. They moved to Eugene in 1940. She attended the Univ of Oregon, and Eugene High School, where she met Byron G. Baker. They were married for 57 years before his passing in 2011. The Baker family also lived in the Santa Barbara, CA, area from 1956-61, and from 1982-89.
Sylvia is survived by her children: Tessa Pierce of Eugene; Bradley Baker (Achara) of Broomfield, CO; Jennifer Armstrong of Henderson, NV; and Natalie Hoag of Eugene; plus nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Sylvia had a passion for art and craft projects, and passed along this joy to her children. She was a gifted designer and colorist. She was a fan of music and movies, and after Byron’s retirement, they explored North America.
Sylvia’s radiant personality and unwavering positivity made an impression on everyone she met. Renowned for her organizational and leadership skills, she was often tapped to be the President of any group she joined. She was a member and past-president of Sacred Heart Hospital Guild, and while her children attended Santa Clara Grade School, she was a PTA member and president.
A long-time Oregon Ducks football fan, some believe Sylvia should have been a coach. But after becoming unable to attend games, she was the Ducks’ biggest (and loudest) armchair coach. She was a proud member of the Daisy Ducks club for many years.
With a reputation for being beautifully “put together,” in later years, Sylvia became known for her custom-made “newsboy” caps paired with jewelry Tessa made to match each outfit.
Sylvia lived out her faith in Jesus Christ from the moment she accepted Him as her Savior on Easter 1976. From that day on, the world was not only going to see her but see God in her. That was her testimony for 49 years. The Bakers attended Eugene Friends Church from 1976-82. After returning from California, they attended Springfield Faith Center.
