Dr. Glen Hoversten passed on November 4th in the company of his wife, Ann, daughter Krista and son, Erik. At age 77 Glen had overcome two prior cancers with the last one beckoning his retirement from a medical career as a colorectal surgeon. A dedicated and well-respected physician, he was best known as an invaluable resource when friends, associates and patients encountered medical issues. His life was spent caring for others. Glen had an infectious laugh, and if laughter is the best medicine, he is legendary for administering it often and with great passion. He studied medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago, graduating in 1973. Following graduation, he worked at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He spent several years practicing medicine on the East Coast before relocating with wife Ann Hoversten to Eugene, Oregon where he worked at the Eugene Clinic. He and Ann both shared an interest in medicine. He met Ann, a nurse, at Wayne County General Hospital in Westland, Michigan. They married on February 17, 1986, and remain together for 38 years, a testament to his deep and constant love for her. After marrying in Wakefield, MA Glen started a fellowship in Boston in Colorectal Surgery. Once retired Glen pursued a number of his passions. An avid reader he devoured mysteries including Shakespear, Sherlock Holmes and science fiction; he even did a siliqua of one of Shakespear's plays at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan. He continued to read a myriad of medical journals to stay up to date on the latest developments in medicine. He loved spinning around the dance floor with Ann doing the Tango, spending considerable time learning dance moves. He also pursued photography including creating his own dark room. Along with these activities he found time to work on home remodels and maintaining several rental properties. Perhaps his most enjoyable pursuit was time on the golf course with good friends.
Ann and Glen enjoyed travel around the US and in Mexico. Sedona, AZ captured a special place in their hearts, and they made numerous trips throughout the years. They also spent considerable time in Florida, where they established a second home in Key West. Glen was always ready to enjoy a good meal with friends, along with time watching shows or an occasional football game with cats curled up on his chest. He loved Ann's cooking so rarely spent time in the kitchen but when he did, he proved himself to be a great chef.
Glen Haster Hoversten fought his third bout of cancer with a tremendous amount of grace and a zeal for life. He died, as he lived, a tribute to a kind, loving and deeply caring man. Glen, always seeking the best for others, offered up his body for autopsy in the hope of providing answers for those left behind to fight cancer. His best friend and buddy Chuck Shotola perhaps said it best, Glen was a strong solider to the end. He is survived by his wife Ann Hoversten and her two children, Jimmy (and Jenny) Sample (Key Largo, FL) and Mary Ann Sample (Eugene, OR), his x-wife Mary Hoversten (Ann Arbor, MI) , daughter Krista (and Mike) Takas, grandchildren Mathias and Elliana. His son Erik Hoversten (and Gillian) (Long Island, NY) . His sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Jim Erickson (Redmond, OR) and their children Seth (and Anita) Erickson, Lucas (and Anicia) Erickson and their daughters Emmie and Rylea, Cy Erickson (and Misty) and their son Delos. His brother Paul Hoversten ( Lynd, MN) and his children Ruth Ann Hoversten, Joseph Hoversten, Elias (and Cassie) Hoversten, Emma Lynn Hoversten. Last but not least, his cat Baily Bear, who waited patiently every night for Glen to get in bed so as to hop into bed with him climbing up onto his chest and purring them both to sleep.
A service is planned for Glen in Key West, Florida in early 2025.
