David Marx

April 16, 1951 — December 18, 2024

David J Marx, age 73, passed away peacefully at home on December 18, surrounded by his family. David is survived by his wife Sheila; his sons Jonathan (Rebecca) and Dylan; and his grandchildren, Benjamin and Leah.

Originally from Chicago, David spent most of his life in San Francisco, where he could often be found at one of many bookstores, a USF basketball game, Joe’s of Westlake, or a Giants game, where he met Sheila, his wife of 35 years.

David was many things: writer, poet, cab driver, mailman, mortgage broker, but he was most proud of being a father, often saying his boys were his greatest accomplishment.

For 27 years, David was a mortgage broker in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. With a reputation for honesty, integrity and hard work, David helped generations of Bay Area residents become homeowners.

Throughout his life, David loved writing, publishing his first novel 381 in 2003, and Biscuit, a collection of stories, several years later. He also wrote many other short stories, essays, and musings, which he shared with friends and family.

David spent his last 10 years in Oregon, where he enjoyed time with his grandchildren (to whom he was lovingly known as “Saba”), fishing (and sometimes catching), occasional horseback rides, more frequent train rides and his extensive jazz collection.

David was a loyal friend to many and someone you could always count on. Though he battled Parkinson’s Disease for more than 20 years, it did not rob him of the many beautiful memories of time spent with family and friends, nor did it his sharp sense of humor.

Our family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to our dear friends for their love and support through the years, especially as times became more difficult. You are our most treasured gifts.
