Craig Freeman Hartberg, 87, died peacefully on July 11, 2024, at Pete Moore Hospice House, following a short illness.
He was born in Watseka, Illinois, on December 7, 1936. With his parents, Henry and Geraldine, he lived in communities in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wyoming after his father entered the ministry.
Craig joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 and served in California, Nebraska, Korea, and Germany. He was honorably discharged in December 1968. He then enrolled at the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1972 with a Master's degree in Business Administration. He moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked in banking until 2000.
Craig and his wife, Jan O. Smith, were married in 2000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While there, Craig worked for the Louisiana Department of Economic Development and served on the Board of Directors of Capital Senior Living Corporation (headquartered in Dallas, Texas).
Craig and Jan moved to Eugene, Oregon, in 2014. Eugene provided a beautiful environment in which to enjoy and value life, make new and supportive friends, and watch family grow and succeed.
Craig is survived by his beloved wife, Jan, of Eugene, Oregon; her daughter, Nicole Dahmen, and grandchildren, Nicholas and Zoey, of Eugene; his brother, Kim Hartberg and wife Suzette, of Rowlett, Texas; Pam Hertzler, of Northglenn, Colorado; Laura Michael, of Fountain, Colorado; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and dogs Happy and Daisy.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hylke Snieder, Dr. Eric Nordsieck, Dr. Carol Whitsel, and the team at Pete Moore Hospice House for their compassionate care.
